What a Divine Accidental Discovery Gills Diner was!
Tucked away behind The Commercial Bakery on 360 Little Collins Street this innocuous post industrial garage has been transformed into a dining space with no compromise to the original building. The beautiful open space was intimately tabled for that retro inspired special/informal evening out. The quiet background music of blues/jazz infusion was courtesy of an impressive vinyl collection played via stylus….nice touch and no crackles!
The menu is European inspired with a slight leaning toward modern Italian. Daily specials abound and are recited by attentive wait staff with a descriptive passion and detail that leaves your mouth watering and you never give the main chalkboard menu a second glance.
The wine list is extensive with a balance of European and Australian tipples. Rosie would personally recommend the fresh crispness of the Elderberry Fizz as an aperitif. Starters are from $15 and mains are around the $34 mark. I will add that after the glowing recommendation from the waitress the kitchen certainly delivered!
We finished our meal with an inspired international cheeseboard that left the taste buds singing. Rosie opted for a regional botrysised dessert wine to accompany her cheese while The Operator who has a perverse palate chose a never before heard of muscat grappa….like all grappa it was a mongrel with pedigree aspirations. Bad choice, the only one of the night.
