Surf Highway 45 – Manaia – Opunake

The name coastal highway is abit deceptive, the road does not hug the coast but  meanders more inland through the beautiful, rolling lush farmland that is synonymous with the region.  Glimpses of sea and white surf caps can be seen between flax bushes, cabbage trees and paddock, a beach is never more than a couple of kms down any road that turns toward the sea.

It was as cold as a witches tit and blowing a force ten gale when Rosie opened the doors of the camper van.  The Operators plan was to stay the night here at the end of the road….the camper was shuddering and swaying, Rosie was terrified the wind was going to blow it over. Good old Cape Egmont, Rosie has never visited this site and found it any different.

The beach itself is a black sand surf beach, nestled within two promontories, it makes for good swimming which is fully patrolled in the summer at the peak of the camping season.  The beach is a public one with toilets, gas BBQs, a fantastic kids playground with paddling pool and picnic shelters available for everyday use.
