Rosie and The Operator took the free City Circle Tram out to Queen Victoria Market, its a small walk from the closest tram stop and then, you step into full blown total sensory chaos!ttp://www.qvm.com.au/qvm/market_precincts.aspx
The vege hall smells of fresh produce and flowers, stall holders are yelling their daily specials, the colours are vibrant and the the fruit and vege are displayed immaculately. The place is crowded and people jostle and push, serious daily buyers of all ages bang their wheelie trolleys into your ankles in a bid to get by.
Across the way is the fish hall, Rosie’s eyes bulged as much as the dead kippers for sale did! The variety is draw dropping, I challenge anyone to not be able to find what they are after.
My favourite hall though is the deli, salami, cheese, olives, ham….everything is on offer and you need to be aggressive to get to the counter, don’t dither, cause there are people behind you waiting to get their order and they are pushy!
When you are all gastroed out head for the area of the market where you can shop for everything from cheap souvenir’s to hats, leather and cell phone covers. Be sure to get to the market early early for the freshest buys as the stalls close up at 3pm. From the market we walked into the suburb of Fitzroy, it had a run down seen better days aura to it, but, it was experiencing a renaissance, boutiques are moving next to run down fetish stores set amongst artist co operatives. The area has a bag lady bohemian feel to it and was a nice walk, the villas with their frilly lace, picket fences and peeling paint are glorious.
